The Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) state tournaments were held March 21-22, 2015. The Avalanche PeeWee A team met their toughest competitor, Sheboygan Lakers in the first round. [The Lakers were the eventual champs defeating Amery 6-0.] It was a very fast paced game from the beginning. The Avalanche were down 3-0 at the end of the first when Hayden Roth, assisted by Anika Einbeck, found the back of the net. The game ended 3-1. Goal tender Heath Bear recorded 31 saves.
In the second game on Saturday, the Avalanche faced Baldwin Blackhawks. It was a back and forth battle between the two teams. The score remained 0-0 until Cade Janecke lit the lamp, assisted by Tessa Janecke for a power play goal. The Avalanche defeated the Blackhawks 1-0 and outshot them 39-20.
On Sunday, the Avalanche took on Reedsburg-Wisconsin Dells (RWD) for the Consolation Championship game. Anika Einbeck opened the game scoring 1:31 into the first period with an assist from Payton Stauffacher. RWD responded a minute later with a goal and the first period ended in a 1-1 tie. RWD scored in the second period. Mid-way through the third Cade Janecke scored in an assist from Anika Einbeck. The game was a nail biter as regular play ended in a 2-2 tie. The game went into an 8 minute sudden death play. It was a back and forth intense game as neither team scored. With 1:12 into the second overtime, Payton Stauffacher fired one in the back of the net with an assist from Tessa Janecke on a power play. The Avalanche PeeWee A claimed the WAHA 3A consolation champion trophy!
Congratulations to the PeeWee A team on a phenomenal season! Their overall record is an impressive 34-5-1 with a state trophy!
Seeded first heading into the playoff games and with a first round bye, the Avalanche PeeWee A team played Sauk Prairie on February 7. The Avalanche dominated the entire game winning 8-1. Each team scored one in the first with an Avalanche goal from Cade Janecke, assisted by Hayden Roth. The Avalanche added two more in the second with goals from Cade Janecke and a goal from the blue line from Payton Stauffacher, on a pass from Cade Janecke. The Avalanche finished the game with four more goals from Ryan Molitor, Tessa Janecke (assisted by Payton Stauffacher), Hayden Roth, and Cade Janecke (assisted by Ryan Molitor and Payton Stauffacher). The Avalanche outshot Sauk 38-10.
In the final game to declare the Region 4 Champs, the Avalanche took on Reedsburg-Wisconsin Dells (RWD). RWD quickly got on the scoreboard in the first period. The Avalanche found their groove in the second period scoring two goals from Hayden Roth (assisted by Tessa Janecke and Payton Stauffacher) and Cade Janecke (assisted by Alyssa Knauf). RWD added one of their own at the end of the second period. The score remain 2-2 until 59 seconds left of the game when Payton Stauffacher, assisted by Ryan Molitor, found the back of the net. Goalie Heath Bear recorded 16 saves. The 3-2 win over RWD secured the Avalanche’s place as the Region 4 Representative for state tournament to be held in Waupaca March 21-22.
